Vinyl

Oh man. I tried out some iron-on vinyl today and it was a little addicting and fun. I bought this stuff a long time ago after seeing a couple of projects that I wanted to try out: a reusable gym bag and a reusable sandwich wrap.

Vinyl lined bag for the gym

I made this velcro bag today to house my wet clothes for the gym. I've been using those disposible plastic baggies from NYSC and realized how wasteful I've been. This bag is just the right size to fit everything, yet will not take up too much room in my gym bag.

For the inside, I used a french seam to help stop any leakage on the sides and the tabs at the top help open it more easily.

Then I moved on to the resuable sandwich wrap based off of this tutorial. The only thing I did differently was to sew around all of the edges instead of fusing them all.

I've seen different versions of the resuable sandwich wrap all over the place, but this one seemed like it really kept the whole sandwich in place without any leaks. We'll see once I try it out on a real sandwich.

hello:

this is uncanny...i, as well, had very recently read about iron-on vinyl & next day inquired at local fabric shop, having never heard of it...well, i'm so excited...i keep thinking of those vinyl-coated harrod's shopping bags & there goes my imagination!

Hi Louise - It was pretty fun to use it, especially if you like laminating stuff. I actually used a shiny vinyl on the gym bag and a matte finish on the sandwich wrap. I would love to see what you come up with!

I love both projects! I need to make one of those gym bags! I'm tired of using random plastic bags for the wet clothes. did you use a tutorial for it?

Thanks, Yahaira! No, I didn't use a tutorial. I cut one big rectangle for the fabric so that the bottom would not have a seam and closed the sides with a french seam. I just folded down the top so that the velcro would fit and then attached the side tabs. I'm sure there must be a tutorial out there, though. Mine ended up being 9x9, but I might do 10x10 next time.
